The country of Fiji is said to grant two geothermal exploration licenses soon. There have been two companies that have been named before having shown an interest in geothermal development in the country.
Fiji is expecting to grant two geothermal exploration licenses soon. There are four sites with geothermal activity in the country, at Savusavu, Labasa, Sabeto and Vatukoula.
Two companies have applied for exploration licenses, one in Sabeto and Vatukoula and another one at Savusavu (Savu Savu).
While the Fiji government has granted over 50 mineral exploration licenses, these would be the first geothermal exploration licenses.
Companies that have been named with the projects are Geothermal Electric (Savu Savu and Labasa-Tabia), Australian KUTh Energy (having submitted four applications in 2008). Other companies that have raised an interest are Mitchell Morgan investments and TriModal. (see ThinkGeoEnergy Article of February 2009)
