There is some progress in efforts for the development of geothermal energy on the Caribbean island state Montserrat, which is a British overseas territory. The island state is believed to be rich in geothermal resources.

While there are economic difficulties currently predominating news today, this “natural resource cannot only be developed for Nevis and St. Kitts but also for the people of Montserrat”m saud Hon. Joseph Parry at the 48th OECS Authority meeting in Montserrat. He further claims that this resource could be exploited and not only sold locally, but made available to the islands in the northern part of the Caribbean.

The UK Department for International Development (DFID) is currently financing exploration, with a geological survey to be done next before any drilling campaign. It is the hope that a decision, which company will start the geothermal activities can be made as early as January 2009. Currently there seems to be no governmental interest by the Montserrat government to cooperate in the establishment of a “Montserrat Geothermal Power Company”.
