Contact Energy marks 50 years of geothermal power from the Wairakei power plant with giving a sculpture to the people of Taupo.

In local news it is reported that “Contact Energy has gifted a sculpture to the people of Taupo to mark 50 years of geothermal energy extraction at the Wairakei power station.

The two-metre-high Maori sculpture by master carver Delanie Brown is near the central North Island town’s cenotaph and was unveiled on Saturday morning.

Contact Energy managing director David Baldwin says the Taupo region is very important to the company’s generation business and the sculpture will be an enduring reminder of the relationship between Contact and Taupo.

The sculpture received a traditional Maori blessing.”
