Mighty River Power has temporarily shut down the Nga Awa Purua plant in New Zealand for assessment and temporary repair of damage to some turbine blades.

Due to damage to turbine blades, the Nga Awa Purua geothermal power plant in Taupo, New Zealand has been temporarily been shut down.

The plant is operated by Mighty River Power, but owned jointly by MRP and Tauhara North No. 2 Trust. The repairs come less than 4 years after the plant started operation.

The repairs are expected to cost around NZ$15 million (US$12.3 million) and will be booked in the fiscal year of 2015.

For now the turbine will for now be modified and allowing ongoing operation at about 95% of possible capacity, with the permanent repairs to be made in about 15 to 18 months.
