Geothermal Energy Market of Ethiopia
Today, Ethiopia derives its electricity mostly from hydropower and wind, yet has strong geothermal development ambitions. Ethiopia was the second country in Africa to install a geothermal power plant, and while it has not been operational for some time there is ongoing development driven by both private players and the national power company EEP. Two large scale IPP projects are under development with plans of more than 500 MW of capacity. Supported under funding by the African Union Commission, there are an additional 16 projects in early stages of development.
