Indonesia is the second largest country with regards to installed geothermal power generation capacity of today 2,130.7 MW. The country is considered the country with the largest geothermal potential with around 24,000 MW. Initial geothermal exploration started already in 1918. Today, more than half of the electricity produced comes from coal fired power plants and only around 14% from renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy is seen as a key element for increased renewable energy utilisation in Indonesia, and there are plans to more than triple the current installed geothermal capacity in the next 10-15 years.
