Geothermal Energy Market Overview of Taiwan
Due to its geographic and geological position on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Taiwan is blessed with favourable geothermal resources. With ambitious plans to replace fossil-fuel based energy generation with renewable energy sources, Taiwan's government is seeing geothermal energy as a great opportunity. The potential development for geothermal is estimated at around 7,000 MW by 2050, which would represent around 15% of the installed power generation capacity today. So far development ambitions have not materialised, while there is ongoing development of smaller and medium-sized geothermal power plants. A new 4.2 MW geothermal plant started operation this year and could be the start of more development to follow.
