Geothermal resources in the Aeolian Islands in Sicily to be investigated
The INGV and the Energy Department of the Sicilian Region have signed an agreement to investigate the geothermal potential in the Aeolian Islands.
An agreement has been signed between the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) of Italy and the Regional Energy Department of the Sicilian Region to investigate and identify the geothermal potential of the Aeolian Islands. This will reduce the dependence of these Sicilian minor islands from water and energy from the outside which has limited the islands’ social and economic development.
Through the study, the INGV will provide the Sicilian Region with an inventory of the available geothermal resources in the islands, as well as the possible means of harnessing this potential through modern technologies. The study has a duration of 36 months after which all the results will be subject to public presentations or drafting of scientific documents.
“It is important to make all the acquired scientific knowledge available to the community,” said INGV President Carlo Doglioni.
The Department of Energy will also provide data on the resident population and monthly number of tourists of each of the Aeolian Islands, as well as their electricity consumption, water consumption.
