INVOLCAN to conduct detailed surface exploration for geothermal in Gran Canaria
INVOLCAN will be conducting a detailed exploration campaign to evaluate geothermal resources within the license area of Gran Canaria Geotermia.
The Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan) will be carrying out detailed surface studies to evaluate the geothermal potential of Gran Canaria. The study will be done in behalf of Gran Canaria Geotermia SL within the license area awarded by the Gran Canaria Energy Council.
The surface studies will encompass resistivity (magnetotelluric) surveys, passive seismic surveys, self-potential measurements, microgravity, geochemistry sampling, hydrogeochemistry, volcano-structural, remote sensing, and geostatistics. These activities will start on the 1st of April and will last approximately four months.
Gran Canaria Geotermia SL, established last year, is a consortium formed by Gran Canaria Energy Council (49.985%), Dando Drilling Spain of the Dando Drilling Group (44.014%), the Ayaguares Medio Ambiente of the Perez Moreno Group (3%), and the Canary Islands Base of the Satocan Group (3%). The consortium had been awarded a geothermal research permit “CIEGC-01 PI” located in the east of the island, mainly in the municipalities of Valsequillo, Ingenio, Agüimes and Telde.
Juan José Martínez, Councilor for Innovation, Research, and Development of the Cabildo de Tenerife, emphasizes that INVOLCAN and the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energy (ITER) has supported the development of geothermal energy in the Canary Islands for the last 15 years. This work has helped in attracting public and private investment in geothermal development in the islands, particularly the funding allocated by the IDAE in 2023.
“The experience of this research group is not limited to the Canary Islands, as over the last 20 years it has carried out surface geothermal exploration studies in Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain (mainland), Ethiopia, Iceland, Kenya, Morocco, New Zealand, Portugal (Azores) and Rwanda,” added Martinez.
