To accelerate the energy transition, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is building a demonstration site at the RWE Weisweiler lignite-fired power plant in the Rhineland for the large-scale development of technologies for the use of geo-resources. An important goal is the climate-neutral supply of heat and electricity to municipalities and industry in the Rhine-Ruhr region during the post-coal period.
The upcoming work covers the entire value chain from the geophysical exploration of suitable reservoir rocks in the Rhineland to the planning and implementation of several deep wells, the new construction of the Fraunhofer IEG research campus for georesources in Weisweiler and (prospectively) the construction of a geothermal research power plant.
