Pertamina Geothermal Energy will be partnering with three companies to develop technologies and strengthen domestic production capabilities for geothermal.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) has implemented a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) with PT Elnusa Tbk (Elnusa), PT PGAS Solutions (PGASOL), and PT Pertamina Maintenance and Construction (PertaMC) to develop technology solutions for geothermal and explore opportunities for domestic production of a number of geothermal power plant components.

The JSA includes, but is not limited to, joint studies related to the potential development of a business portfolio covering:

  • Heat exchanger manufacture;
  • Geothermal operation and maintenance services;
  • Cooling tower manufacture; and
  • EPCC and pipeline construction.

The signing of the Geothermal Center of Excellence JSA took place in Jakarta, Indonesia. In attendance at the event were representatives and leaders of PT Pertamina (Persero), Pertamina New and Renewable Energy (PNRE), and the four companies directly involved in the JSA. The direct presence of the leaders of the collaborating companies shows the importance of the JSA which will facilitate discussions, studies, a forum for exchanging information, and joint studies for the development of geothermal energy.

Strengthening the local value chain

The JSA aims to help strengthen the potential manufacturing capabilities of domestic energy and engineering companies in creating a new and leading ecosystem in the geothermal sector. This will contribute in making geothermal development more affordable. Until now, most of the technology used for geothermal development is still imported.

The JSA is a breakthrough in diversifying business models and creating added value from geothermal technology through new revenue streams, exploring business potential beyond electricity. With synergy with the Pertamina Group, PGE believes that expansion to create geothermal future revenue streams can increase competitive advantage, encourage innovation, and commercial attractiveness.

PGE President Director Julfi Hadi explained that the signing of the JSA was a strategic step for PGE and its partners in optimizing geothermal energy development by utilizing domestic industrial capabilities and technological expertise.

“This initiative is an extraordinary effort that deserves mutual appreciation because in the future there will be innovation and various other collaborations to create a massive and integrated technology portfolio in renewable energy. We are optimistic about the great potential of geothermal energy to become a driving force in accelerating the transition to clean energy,” said Julfi Hadi.

A world-class company

Julfi Hadi emphasized that as a world-class green energy company, PGE continues to innovate and collaborate with partners to advance the geothermal sector. “Geothermal is an energy source with almost zero emissions with abundant potential, especially in various PGE Geothermal Working Areas (WKP) with potential that can be developed up to 3 GW. Geothermal potential must continue to be developed so that it can play a major role in the energy transition,” said Julfi Hadi.

A. Salyadi Saputra, Director of Strategy of PT Pertamina (Persero), also expressed appreciation of the strategic collaboration to create a Geothermal Centre of Excellence. “This is a very strategic initiative for Pertamina, which has been managing geothermal energy in Indonesia for more than 40 years. It is hoped that this collaboration will support PGE to achieve its vision of becoming a world class green energy company with the largest geothermal capacity globally.”

Pertamina as a leading company in the energy transition sector, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuing to encourage programs that have a direct impact on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All of these efforts are in line with the implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) across Pertamina’s business lines and operations.
