Pertamina Geothermal Energy has announced a three-point strategy to create value and support a sustainable ecosystem built around geothermal energy.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) has developed a three-point strategy to create value for geothermal energy, thus building a sustainable ecosystem that support the transition to clean energy and reducing carbon emissions.

The strategy was discussed by Ahmad Yani, Operational Director during the 2023 Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) forum at the Jakarta Convention Center. The three points of the strategy are as follows:

  • Managing the income base through maintaining geothermal assets and reservoirs;
  • Maximizing income from geothermal sources through co-generation technology and greenfield development, developing derivative products, and implementing cooperation schemes with other parties;
  • Facilitating a business transition by the development of derivative products.

PGEO is already in the process of creating derivative value from geothermal through the green hydrogen pilot project in Ulubelu and Lahendong, geothermal tourism in Lao Lao, and geo-agribusiness.

“The solid strategy implemented by Pertamina Geothermal Energy remains based on the application of ESG principles as an effort to maintain good governance and create positive social and environmental impacts,” added Yani. He also added that PGEO is currently focused on building and supporting small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).  “No less important, Pertamina Geothermal Energy continues to build a sustainable ecosystem by continuing to support the transition to clean energy and reducing carbon emissions.”

During the same event, Executive Director of the International Geothermal Association (IGA) Marit Brommer said there needs to be an effort to create that will strengthen public awareness regarding the renewable energy industry. “In this case, the renewable energy industry must continue to create interesting stories so that more people are interested in this industry. For example, coffee from Kamojang is being presented today.”
