PT PLN seeks partnerships for Indonesia geothermal projects
State-owned PT PLN is looking for strategic partners for the exploration and development of geothermal projects in Indonesia.
State-owned enterprise PT PLN (Persero) has issued an invitation for companies for strategic partnerships aimed at the exploration, exploitation, and utilization of the Geothermal Working Areas (WKPs) in Indonesia. This invitation is open to all interested parties including local companies, foreign companies, consortiums, foreign investment companies, and other business entities.
The First Batch of the open competitive procurement process for partner selection will be conducted on April 2023. This will be for the Tulehu, Songa Wayaua, Atadei, and Tangkuban Perahu WKPS. Parties who are interested in becoming strategic partners are invited to register their intern immediately by sending an email with subject “PLN Geothermal Partnership” and details (company profile, name of contact person, phone number and valid email for future communication) to geothermal.energy@pln.co.id.
The partnership will cover exploration work including a feasibility study, development of geothermal facilities, and energy conversion from geothermal resources. PLN currently holds the geothermal licenses for the following WKPs:
- Tulehu (1 x 20 MW) in Ambon Island, Maluku Tengah Regency, Maluku Province
- Atadei ( 2 x 5 MW) in Lembata Regency, Nusa Tenggara Timur Province
- Songa Wayaua (2 x 5 MW) in Bacan Island, Halmahera Selatan Regency, Maluku Utara Province
- Tangkuban Perahu (2 x 20 MW) in Subang Regency, Bandung Regency, and Purwakarta Regency, West Java Province
- Ungaran (55 MW) in Semarang Regency and Kendal Regency, Central Java Province
- Kepahiang (2 x 55 MW) in Kepahiang Regency and Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province
- Oka Ile Ange (2 x 5 MW) in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province
- Gunung Sirung (5 MW) in Pantar Island Alor, East Nusa Tenggara Province
- Danau Ranau (20 MW) in South Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, South Sumatera Province and West Lampung Regency, Lampung Province
PLN has prepared detailed 3G studies (Geology, Geochemistry, and Geophysics) for each of the Geothermal Working Areas.
As part of the Government of Indonesia’s program of Net Zero Emissions by 2060 and to accelerate the clean energy transition, PT PLN has the commitment to develop its Geothermal Working Areas with a total estimated capacity of 260 MW. In 2022, PLN announced plans of constructing a 40-MW geothermal power plant in the Ulumbu geothermal area in the Manggarai Regency in East Nusa Tenggara.
